Container

A .geov file is a PKZIP-compatible archive (binary). The local file header typically begins with the ZIP signature PK\x03\x04. The outer file MUST be handled as binary when stored or transferred.

Required members:

  • project.json — UTF-8 JSON project descriptor (see below).
  • layers/ — one or more *.geojson files (UTF-8 JSON GeoJSON FeatureCollections, RFC 7946).

Unknown archive entries SHOULD be ignored for forward compatibility. Optional product-specific members are not part of this normative specification.

project.json

Top-level object fields:

FieldTypeDescription
versionstringDescriptor version (e.g. 2.0).
typestringMUST be GeoVProject.
namestringHuman-readable project name.
cameraobjectlatitude, longitude, zoom, bearing, tilt (map view).
layersarrayLayer descriptors (see below).
provenanceobjectOptional metadata (createdBy, packageFormat, contentType, symbologySchema).

Each element of layers[] includes at minimum name, visible, style, and layerFile (basename under layers/). Optional symbology is defined in GEOV symbology.

Recommended provenance.contentType: application/vnd.geovirtuallis.geov+zip. Recommended provenance.packageFormat: portable-zip-v1.

Layer GeoJSON

Each referenced file MUST be a GeoJSON FeatureCollection. Coordinates use longitude, latitude order per RFC 7946. Exporters SHOULD omit implementation-internal feature property keys (names beginning with __).

Security considerations

Packages are data-only (JSON and GeoJSON). They do not execute code or escalate privileges. Importers SHOULD limit ZIP entry count and expanded size, parse JSON with bounded resources, and treat all strings as untrusted. Packages may contain sensitive location and attribute data.

Interoperability

ZIP is supported on common desktop and mobile systems. JSON members are UTF-8. The version field in project.json governs descriptor semantics; implementations SHOULD support documented versions or reject invalid packages clearly.

Applications that use this media type

  • MiniGISimple — Firefox WebExtension micro-GIS viewer.
  • GISimple — GIS Innovation product family.
  • GeoVirtuallis — portable GEOV interchange.
