Thank you all for your help:
Below is a summary

First, create a new field in your table.  Then, in the Field Calculator,
type in the word: rec
If you don't want 0 or you want to start at a specific number, do rec+1 or
rec+100, etc

That should give all polygons a sequential ID.

Thanks Lori and Pieta.  There were other routes to complete this task but
this one is the easiest and the shortest.
