I received no replies to two postings on this problem, but I did get some helpful feedback from ESRI tech support. I did find a solution for the problem, and I will detail below another related problem that others may be experiencing when trying to change a linked JPEG in a report. The problem was that the PC I was using never had a copy of MS Photo Editor installed when Office 2000 was installed. I can see where this might have happened, since it appears MS Photo Editor is not included in the default installation--it has to be selected in the Office installation dialog. In more detail, I learned that two things are required for linked OLE JPEGs to work in Crystal Reports: 1. Configure the registry settings correctly: · Select HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg · Make sure the 'Default' item has a value of "jpegfile" · Make sure the 'Content Type' item has a value of "image/jpeg" · Select HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg · Make sure the 'Default' item has a value of "jpegfile" · Make sure the 'Content Type' item has a value of "image/jpeg" 2. Install a JPEG OLE server on the client computer. Microsoft Photo Editor is an example of a JPEG OLE Server. Once I fulfilled these requirements, however, I continued to have problems. Although I was no longer seeing icons displayed in reports, I was experiencing difficulty getting the OLE JPEG link to update properly. A pop-up window appeared explaining that a link could not be updated. I was presented with two buttons in this pop-up window, "Ok" and "Links..." When clicking "Links", I was presented with a Links updating dialog. I recognized that the file name was not correct. In an previous report operation, I decided to change the source file of the OLE JPEG. I deleted the JPEG ("incident_010624.jpg"), then inserted a new OLE Object, linked to a new JPEG file ("map_010624.jpg"). I saved the report with the same report name. When reopening the report, however, I noticed that the link to the old JPEG file persisted, and its link could not be changed or broken, no matter what I did. I even tried deleting the JPEG from the directory in windows explorer, but the image stubbornly persisted in the report, just like I think a static image would. Finally, I deleted the JPEG, inserted the new linked OLE JPEG, and then saved the report with a different name. Now when I open a report based on this template, the report links to the new JPEG are properly refreshed. I think that this may very well be an undocumented problem with Crystal Reports. This is one which I experienced on both my PC at home, and the PC at the office. Neither breaking a link, nor changing the source of an OLE JPEG seems to update the report's links--until the report is saved under a different file name. Cordially, Brian Denzer
